What You Need to Know About the SQE
The Solicitors Qualifying Examination (SQE) is your gateway to becoming a qualified solicitor in England and Wales. To take the SQE, you’ll need a bachelor’s degree. While this degree doesn’t need to be in law, non-law graduates must first complete a PGDL or equivalent qualification. The SQE is divided into two parts: SQE 1 and SQE 2, and you must pass SQE 1 before moving on to SQE 2.
SQE 1
SQE 1 consists of two days of multiple-choice exams, with 180 single best-answer questions each day. The exam tests your knowledge of Functioning Legal Knowledge (FLK), split into two parts:
FLK 1: Business Law, Contract Law, Dispute Resolution, Tort Law, Public Law, The Legal System of England and Wales, Legal Services
FLK 2: Property Law, Land Law, Probate Law, Trusts, Criminal Law, and Solicitors Accounts
Ethics and Professional Conduct is a pervasive subject and will be tested throughout all areas. SQE 1 is held twice a year, in January and July, with three attempts allowed over a six-year period. Check the SRA website for exact dates and fees.
SQE 2
SQE 2 is a more hands-on, practical assessment, with 50% of the exam focusing on legal knowledge and the other 50% on key legal skills. Spread over five days, SQE 2 includes both written and oral exams.
Oral Exams: Two days of Advocacy and Interviewing exams, testing your skills in Dispute Resolution, Criminal Litigation, Property Practice, and Probate Practice.
Written Exams: Three days of written assessments, including Case and Matter Analysis, Legal Drafting, Legal Research, and Legal Writing, covering a wide range of legal subjects such as Dispute Resolution, Business Law, Property Practice, and more.
After the SQE
To qualify as a solicitor, passing both SQE 1 and SQE 2 is only part of the journey. You’ll also need to complete two years of Qualifying Work Experience (QWE), which can be done before, during, or after your exams. This experience must cover multiple Solicitor Competencies as outlined by the SRA. Discuss the details of your QWE with your employer to ensure it meets the SRA’s requirements.
Once your QWE is completed, you’ll undergo a final assessment of character and suitability by the SRA. Successfully meeting these requirements means you’ll be ready for admission to the Roll of Solicitors.
